Window Shade Measuring Guide

Accurate measurements are essential to ensure your Sun Glow shades fit perfectly and function optimally. This guide covers the basics of measuring for various applications, including patio doors, bay windows, French doors, corner applications, low-depth windows.

Before starting, have a steel measuring tape/laser measure, pen, and notepad ready, and always measure to the nearest 1/16 of an inch. If you’re unsure, we recommend double-checking your measurements or consulting with a Sun Glow specialist.

General Measuring Tips

Use a Steel Measuring Tape

Flexible fabric tapes can stretch, leading to inaccurate measurements.

Measure to the Nearest 1/16 Inch

Round down if between sizes to ensure a snug fit.

Record The Width and The Height

Measure the smallest width and length out of 3 measurements.

Consider
Obstructions

Account for obstructions like window cranks, locks, handles, and baseboards. Mount forward or use a reverse roll to ensure functionality.

Choosing Between Inside and Outside Mount
for Window Shades

Characteristics of Inside Mount

  • Opting for inside mounting achieves a seamless, integrated aesthetic.
  • Enables the hanging of draperies over the blind.
  • Results in a light gap present on both sides of the shade.
Inside Mount

Decide on Valance Option:

Determine where you will mount the shade, making sure you have at least 2 inches of flat space to install. When choosing your valance, make sure your mounting depth can accommodate the valance or decide if you are okay with the valance protruding outside the window frame.

Obstructions:

Obstructions can include window cranks and handles. Typically, to avoid cranks and handles reverse roll is recommended. However, if you have sufficient depth to install the shade and clear the obstruction, a standard/regular roll install may be possible.

Width And Height:

Measure horizontally to the nearest 1⁄16 inch from the inside surface you want to cover with the shade; at the left, middle, and right. Record the narrowest width of the three.

Characteristics of Outside Mount

  • Provides greater flexibility in selecting valances due to fewer space restrictions.
  • When the window’s interior depth is limited, outside mount provides an alternative to accommodate hardware for shade mounting.
  • Visually enlarges a window’s appearance.
  • Improves the appearance of unsightly or non-square windows that need concealing.
  • Ensures complete window coverage, eliminating any light gaps.
Outside Mount

Decide on Valance Option:

Valance options are more flexible for outside mounts, however windows that are close together or may have valances butt up next to each other may impact installation.

Obstructions:

  • Ledges : Use shim to avoid fabric rubbing against it.
  • Door handles protrude : Reverse roll is the only option. No hem hold down can be installed if reverse roll.

Width and Height:

Measure the overall area you want to cover. Consider adding 1.5 to 3 inches to each side of the window frame for optimal privacy and light control.

Special Applications

Patio Doors

Patio doors require shades that allow for easy access and movement. Sliding doors typically require a split-design roller shade.

  • Width: Measure the entire width of the door, including the frame and trim, tip to tip.
  • Height: Measure from the top of the door frame to the floor, adding the height of the valance to the measurement. For an open roll system, please add around 3 inches.
  • Sliding Door Tips: If you prefer a vertical solution, measure the width and height for a panel track system or split-design shade. Keep in mind that a panel track system will be of one size, which may permanently cover the door and glass unless mounted outside.

Bay Windows

Bay windows involve multiple angled windows, requiring individual measurements for each section.

  • Individual Window Widths: Measure each window width separately at the top, middle, and bottom, noting the narrowest width.
  • Individual Window Heights: Measure the height from the top to the sill for each window and use the longest one.
  • Angled Depth: Ensure that the shade depth does not interfere with the adjacent window. You may need a specialized mounting bracket or custom-fit shade for proper alignment and function.
Valance Size (in inches)
Aria 2 3/8 inches
Open Roll 3 inches
Compact Curved Cassette 3 1/2 inches
3″ Fascia 3 1/2 inches
4″ Fascia 4 3/8 inches
Dual Shade 4 1/2 inches
Curved Cassette 4 inches
Square Cassette 3 7/8 inches
V84 3 3/8 inches
V102 4 1/4 inches

French Doors

French doors often have handles or levers that could interfere with the movement of the shade. When ordering the shade, please order Cloth finish for the measure type. For the best fit:

  • Width: Measure the glass width, then add 1 inch total for optimal coverage.
  • Height: Measure from the top of the glass area to the bottom. Then Add the height of the valance to the measurement. For an open roll system, please add 2 inches.
  • Depth Considerations: An outside mount is more suitable for french doors. Consider low-profile shades for a flush fit with the door surface.
ConsiderationsInstructions
Door MechanismEnsure it is not obstructed (piston mechanism preferred).
Exit SignCheck that the shade does not block visibility.
Door’s Opening DirectionEnsure the shade does not interfere with door movement.

MountingInstructions
Dry WallAlways use plugs that can be anchored on the wall.
Door or MullionCheck with the manufacturer for warranty, humidity, and stability concerns.
Steel/Concrete/TilesEnsure you have the correct tools for installation.
Bottom BarEnsure the bottom bar crosses the handle without touching.

Corner Windows

For windows that meet at a corner, measuring with precision ensures proper coverage without gaps.

  • Primary Window: Measure the full width and height as you would for a standard inside or outside mount.
  • Secondary Window: Measure the width and height but subtract the depth of the primary window shade from the width measurement. This ensures the secondary window shade overlaps and fits snugly in the corner. To get the shade depth, please refer to the table reference below.
  • Depth Check: Ensure that both shades can operate independently without obstruction.

Low Depth Windows

When the window frame is too shallow for a full inside mount, you may need to choose a low-profile shade or consider an outside mount.

  • Width: Measure the width of the window at the top, middle, and bottom, and use the narrowest measurement.
  • Height: Measure the height from the top of the frame to the bottom sill on both sides and at the center.
  • Mounting Options: For low-depth frames, opt for a shade that can be mounted partially inside or outside the window frame with atleast a ceiling mount to maximize coverage without compromising the fit.
